About Nahan

Located amidst Shivalik ranges, Nahan is a beautiful picturesque town overlooking snow capped mountains and verdant green forestland in the district of Sirmaur in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Perched at a height of 932 meters from the sea level this natural heritage preserver is presently serving as the headquarters of Sirmaur district. Laid out ambiance, dust free zero polluted fresh air and clean streets and extraordinary natural beauty is the key essence of this small town of Nahan. Apart from being a preferred tourist destination the city also serves as the base location for Indian Special Forces Training School.

History of Nahan

One of the most interesting features of the beautiful town Nahan is its glorious past linking it to various events of India history. According to some views the city was founded in the year 1621, by Maharaja Karam Prakash, served as the capital of the princely state of Sirmaur in those days. Nahan dervied its name from word “Nahar” which means “do not kill.”As per the locals there lived a famous saint in this region named as Baba Banwari das. The residence of the saint was based in exactly the same location where later Nahar fort was built. Baba Banwari Das used to live with his companion named Nahar. In an incident, the King was aiming to shoot a lion in the forested area and at that very moment Saint Banwari Das shouted Nahar which meant do not kill. According to villagers this incident functioned for the town in proclaiming the name “Nahan”. It has served its rich existence till the British days when it was counted as a prominent agricultural town of this region till the year 1857. It was after this that a foundry was established here to manufacture best quality based modernized agriculture tools which were later taken over by the British officers of the East India Company just prior to the Anglo Gurkha war. According to historical reference the small town Nahan played a crucial role in Anglo Afgan and Anglo Sikh War.

Geography of Nahan

The exact meridians of Nahan are based at 30.55°North Latitudes and 77.3°East longitudes. Being a part of the southernmost district of Himachal Pradesh, Nahan remains well bordered by prominent tehsils like Sangrah tehsil on the Northern side, Pachhad tehsil to the east, Naraingarh tehsil covering the western part and Sadaura Tehsil covering the southern side of the city. It lies close to Haryana State Border with Ambala and Yamunanagar close by. Nahan is situated at a distance of 71 km from the state headquarter Shimla. Since Simaur district has a lot of water bodies flowing through its area , Nahan being a part of the district remains close to prominent water bodies Like Markanda River on the west and River Bata on the eastern side. The city has rich fertile alluvial soil which helps largely in agricultural production.

Climate of Nahan

Nahan experiences pleasant climate. The summers are bright, radiant and sunny with temperature not hovering above 38°C during the months of April to June. Even if it becomes a little hot, the cool breeze from the mountains makes it quite pleasant. June is the hottest month in this region. July to September is the monsoon season in Nahan when sufficient rainfall marks the area. It is not advisable to visit the place during this time since it is absolutely not safe to go for sightseeing. Winters are pretty early in this location. From the month of October one can experience the cool temperatures. It stays till late February. January is the coldest month and with the chilling air waves from the mountains temperature often go below freezing point during this month. However the overall climate of Nahan remains pleasant the whole year but the best time to visit is always the summer months when one can enjoy the city to the fullest.

Population of Nahan

According to census 2011, the total population of the city of Nahan is 28,899 individuals of which 15,225 are male individuals and the rest 13,674 are female individuals. The child population of the city which bears kids between age 0-6 years of age is only 2952 which comprises around 10.21% of the total population. The sex ratio of the city comprises of 898 female individuals against every 1000 male inhabitants. This is striking low in compared to the state average which comprises of 972 females against every 1000 male. Even the child sex ratio counts low at 871 girls for every 1000 boys against the state average of 909 girls.The maximum population in Nahan city are Hindus comprising of 79.40% of the total population, followed by Muslim population at 13.69%, Christian at 0.48%, Sikh at 5.83% and the rest Buddist and Jains. The literacy rates of the city as stated in census 2011 is counted at 91.49% which is quite high to the state average which stands at 82.80%. The male literate city in the whole population stands at 94.01% and the female literacy stands at 88.71%. The local language of the population based here is Hindi, Punjabi and Pahari. Some people however are aware of English language too since it’s a prime tourist location.

Culture of Nahan

Inhabitants of Nahan are quite religious and remain indulged in their Vedic beliefs. They also remain hesitant to modern theories and trends. Though they are very here are cordial, warm and friendly which makes the city more admirable. One of the unique features of the culture of Nahan is the attire and sense of fashion present in the populace. The natives prefer to wear colorful and bright clothes with women wearing a lot of costume jewelry. Scarfs and Himalayan caps are quite popular among people here. While women wear kurta, ghagra or salwars the men here prefers to wear kurta and churidaars.

The major festivals in this location include Vyas fair, Gandhi Fair, Salona, Maghi Festival, Haryali Festival, Diwali and Bisu Festival. Most of these festivals are celebrated with good food, folk dance, folk music and immense merry making. Among these festivals, Bisu is the most prominent one since it portrays the famous Thoda dance of this region. Nahan portrays a wide collection of folk dances and folk music which are quite practiced in this region in various festivals, occasions and family functions. In case of dance, the popular forms in this part of state include Gee dance, Rasa, Kariyala, Burah dance and Thoda dance. These are excellent forms of Pahari dance and a must watch for all visitors. The folk music is usually played along with these dance forms which includes Laman, Jhoori, Gange, Tappe etc. Dhol, Dolki, jhajh, Manjira are some of the popular instruments played here.

Economy of Nahan

Nahan is a city which is majorly depended on its primary source of income which is agriculture. Having a fertile land, more than 90% of the population are involved in agricultural business and farming. Since traditional methods are used for farming there remains scope for huge improvement in the cultivation style, process and results. The cultivated area in Nahan is much less due to forested lands comprising some part of the region. This park is one of the prominent locations in Asia and one of its kind which was developed at the actual location of the fossils. Being based at the banks of Markanda river, this is the biggest fossil find of the country. The mammalian fossils found here include Gharial, giant land tortoise, saber-toothed tiger, hippopotamus and large toothed elephant. It is a joint venture of State Government of Himachal Pradesh and Geological Survey of India making it a prominent tourist location. The park remains open every day from 9:30am to 5pm except on Tuesdays.

Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary

There are no direct railway stations or airport terminal based close to Nahan. However one can take a cab or opt for a bus ride to reach the destination. The nearest airport to Nahan is Chandigarh airport located at a distance of 54 km from the heart of the city. The airport at Chandigarh is a popular airport with flights to multiple domestic and international destinations. It connects to all metro cities of the country.
